This kit is designed as an introduction to the peerless body of embroidery known as Opus Anglicanum. The stitches employed are not complex. Some of the textiles, and most assuredly the gold, may tax your patience. It is my recommendation you submerge yourself into a complete Zen state before approaching the embroidery. Level of skill required: intermediate to advanced embroiderer.
The design I developed for this alms purse evolved out of study of several almoniers of the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. The saint depicted in this alms purse is St. Elthelraeda, patron saint of embroiderers. It is an allegorical scene, with St. Ethelraeda holding the Book of Truth. What this means, exactly, I’m not quite sure. But it seemed fitting.
